Whether refreshing your closet with springtime hues, discovering your new go-to pair of confidence-boosting jeans, or choosing pieces with on-trend design details, we’ve got your favorite style moments all wrapped up. Let’s take a look at the most-loved trends and stories from April!
Fresh mint led the pastel pack this month, becoming the season’s breakout color. Soft green tops paired with light-wash denim create a spring-forward vibe, and add an airy, effortless aesthetic to everyday looks. During April, we were reaching for pieces that were equal parts stylish and versatile — tops with flutter sleeves, fresh white jeans, and soft silhouettes perfect for the season.
Pastels aren't just pretty — they’re powerful. Mint tones bring an unexpected freshness to wardrobe staples and layer beautifully with neutrals or prints, making them a must-have for spring styling.
Bright, clean, and endlessly versatile — white denim made a major impact this month. From Ankle Skimmers to Wide Legs, and always-flattering Girlfriend silhouettes, our “Ab”solution® white jeans prove that the perfect pair of light-colored denim really does exist — without being see-through.
Thanks to curve-loving technology like our elastic no-gap waistband, asset-boosting sweetheart yoke, and built-in stretch, these styles fit and flatter everybody and every body. Pair them with pastels, prints, or crisp button-downs for a look that’s as fresh as spring itself.
Utility style got a polished and chic update in April. From Wide Leg jeans to Straight Leg pants and Cargo shorts, “Ab”solution® utility pants combine function with femininity. These styles are made with our signature fit technology for a mold-and-hold fit and on-trend details like double buttons and neutral tones that go with everything.
Whether you’re running errands or dressing up a casual day, our “Ab”solution® utility pants offer all-day comfort without compromising on style. Put together an easygoing look with a crisp white tee and sneakers or dress them up a little with a printed blouse and heels.
Hand-crafted textures took center stage this month. With the soft, airy notes of spring in the air, we were gravitating toward embroidered yoke tops, scalloped crochet knits, and pintuck blouses — all beautifully made with rich, vintage-inspired detail.
These pieces instantly elevate everyday outfits with their artisanal charm and pair perfectly with denim shorts or relaxed utility pants. It’s the little touches — like scallop edges, a braided tie, and a flounce peplum hem — that make a big impact.
As we head into May, we’re taking these style wins with us—fresh pastels, essential denim, and elevated everyday pieces. Here’s to a new month of feeling confident, comfortable, and undeniably you.

]]>Denim is a cornerstone of our brand, and we’re proud to say that it’s also at the heart of our sustainability journey. Through thoughtful fabric sourcing and mindful production, we’re working toward a cleaner future — one pair of jeans at a time.
Denim is one of fashion’s most loved (and most polluting) categories — but it doesn’t have to be. We’ve taken it upon ourselves to change that narrative by integrating eco-conscious materials into our collections, without ever sacrificing comfort, quality, or fit.
Our solution? Recycled REPREVE® materials.
We’ve embraced REPREVE® — a leading brand of sustainable performance fiber — to help transform post-consumer waste into planet-friendly denim. This innovative material uses recycled plastic bottles to create polyester that’s not just high-performing, but high-impact in all the right ways.
So far, REPREVE® has given over 40 billion plastic bottles a second life (yes, 4,300 every minute!). Rather than contributing to landfill waste or ending up in our oceans, these bottles are repurposed into durable, soft, and stretchy fabric — perfect for our curve-loving, ultra-flattering “Ab”solution® jeans.
Choosing REPREVE® over traditional (virgin) polyester reduces carbon emissions, conserves energy and water, and transforms everyday waste into fashion that makes a difference. It’s sustainability with style.
We’ve always believed in “Curve Equality” and inclusive fits for every shape, size, and body, and that principle doesn’t change when it comes to our sustainability efforts. By integrating REPREVE® into our “Ab”solution® line, we’ve found a way to do right by your curves and the Earth simultaneously.
Our REPREVE® denim delivers the same “Ab”solution® fit technology you know and love, with a no-gap waistband, tummy-smoothing panels, and shape-enhancing details. Only now, with a greener footprint.
Being sustainable isn’t about being perfect — it’s about making better choices, one step (or stylish outfit) at a time. So, as you conserve your water, replace your lightbulbs, or plant a tree to do your part for the planet, consider making greener fashion choices, too. Whether you’re refreshing your spring wardrobe or leaving behind fast fashion in favor of longer-lasting, better-made styles, every little bit helps.
This Earth Day and beyond, we invite you to choose denim that does more. More for your confidence. More for your closet. And more for the planet.
Shop the REPREVE® Denim Collection today — because your jeans should hug you (and the planet) just right.

At Democracy Clothing, we believe in making an impact beyond fashion. For the 5th year in a row, we’re honored to spotlight our ongoing partnership with The Judy Fund, dedicated to raising awareness and supporting the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Through our initiatives, we’re helping to fund vital research and advocacy efforts to end Alzheimer’s. With our partnership, we hope to contribute to their efforts and finally eliminate this disease that disproportionately impacts women.
Thank you for being part of our journey this month! Stay tuned for even more style inspiration, new releases, and meaningful collaborations as we step into the next season together.

]]>We at Democracy Clothing have been honored to partner with several important organizations that have and continue to support the community in ways that resonate with us and you as our customers. Although we may be experts in denim, we also value the ability to pay it forward and shine a light on the important causes that make a difference in so many lives.
At Democracy Clothing, we believe in the power of women to create positive change in the world. That’s why we spotlight and contribute to organizations and initiatives that help women overcome challenges and make a difference in their communities. That’s why we were proud to partner with A New Way of Life Reentry Project for the second year in a row.
The organization, founded in 1998 by Susan Burton and led today by Co-Director Pamela Marshall, is dedicated to helping women rebuild their lives after incarceration, meeting them with support, dignity, and opportunity. For Women’s History Month, we donated $1 for every order placed throughout March.
Many of us at Democracy Clothing, and doubtlessly many of you, are mothers. Mothers not only nurture the next generation but also cultivate ideas and movements that shape a better world. Sybrina Fulton, Trayvon Martin’s mother, founded Circle of Mothers to bring together mothers who have lost children or family members due to senseless violence.
Her story inspired us, as it did many others, and we were thrilled to partner with Circle of Mothers to raise awareness and support their cause. For every order placed in the month of May, we donated $1 for every purchase to Circle of Mothers, plus $5 from every purchase made from specially curated items that were part of Fulton's style selects.
For three years in a row, we’ve partnered with The Judy Fund to raise funds and awareness around Alzheimer’s disease and the impact it has on families. However, Democracy Clothing’s connection to the organization stems decades back, our founder Caren Lettiere and chair of The Judy Fund, Elizabeth Gelfand Stearns first met as students at UCLA.
This year, we supported a new initiative: The Care + Cure Collection. 5% of every purchase from this curated selection of holiday styles went directly to The Judy Fund through the Alzheimer’s Association, helping to advance the Women’s Alzheimer’s Research Initiative at the Alzheimer’s Association, and funding care and support for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and their families.
We all know the important role teachers play in our lives and our children’s lives. They’re the unsung heroes of our classrooms and communities, but every year, educators spend an average of $500 of their own money on classroom supplies. That’s why teacher Charles Best founded DonorsChoose in 2000, a platform where teachers could post requests for classroom resources, allowing donors to directly fund projects that matter.
In September, with the support of DonorsChoose, we launched the Democracy Clothing Stock Your Closets Sweepstakes. Three teachers who entered the sweepstakes won a $500 DonorsChoose gift card to stock up on classroom supplies, and 25 teachers received a $100 Democracy Clothing e-gift card to refresh their wardrobes with our comfy, stylish jeans.
We all must face challenges and obstacles throughout our lives, but when we rally together, anything is possible. Stay tuned for more exciting partnerships and opportunities to contribute to the community, coming soon!
Help us spread the word about these collaborations by sharing this blog post with your community!
]]>The holiday season is a time for gathering, sharing stories, and creating memories that last a lifetime. But for millions of families, Alzheimer’s disease disrupts these precious moments—especially for women, who are disproportionately affected both as patients and as caregivers.
For the fourth year, Democracy Clothing is proud to support The Judy Fund, this time with a new initiative: The Care + Cure Collection. This curated selection of holiday styles makes a real impact, with 5% of every purchase going directly to The Judy Fund through the Alzheimer’s Association, helping to advance the Women’s Alzheimer’s Research Initiative at the Alzheimer’s Association, and funding care and support for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and their families.
The Care + Cure Collection is rooted in a decades-long friendship between Democracy’s founder Caren Lettiere and Elizabeth Gelfand Stearns, chair of The Judy Fund, who met as students at UCLA. Over the years, their bond has grown through a shared commitment to empowering women and advancing the fight against Alzheimer’s.
When it came time to launch this year’s Care + Cure Collection, Caren and Elizabeth embraced the chance to connect in person for a meaningful pop-up event. At the Laya Boutique in Santa Monica, Caren and Elizabeth brought together friends, family, and community members for a shopping and learning experience to benefit The Judy Fund.
At the pop-up, Elizabeth shared vital information about the impact of Alzheimer’s on women and registered attendees for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s while the Democracy team helped women find their fit and size in confidence-boosting styles. The gathering reflected support across generations, from Elizabeth’s niece and her niece’s young daughter to Caren’s sisters and 85-year-old mother. Together, attendees honored the collection’s purpose, emphasizing that Alzheimer’s affects all ages and that everyone can play a role in finding a cure.
Alzheimer’s disease affects women at disproportionate rates, impacting their health, daily lives, and often positioning them as primary caregivers. Nearly two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s are women, and researchers believe that hormonal factors, like the drop in estrogen during menopause, may increase Alzheimer’s risk. Alongside these biological risks, over 60% of caregivers for those with Alzheimer’s are also women, who often face the dual challenges of caregiving and managing careers and families. Consider these statistics shared by the Alzheimer’s Association:
The Care + Cure Collection not only raises awareness but also directly supports The Judy Fund’s impact. Established in memory of Elizabeth’s mother, Judy Gelfand, The Judy Fund has raised and granted over $10 million, uniting thousands of donors in support of Alzheimer’s research and caregiving resources. Contributions from the Care + Cure Collection will fund:
When you shop from the Care + Cure Collection, you’re not only gifting yourself or someone you love, but also supporting The Judy Fund’s mission to empower caregivers and advance research that could one-day end Alzheimer’s devastating impact on women. Here’s how you can help:
The Care + Cure Collection represents the true spirit of the holidays: connection, compassion and community. Together, we can turn gifting into an act of care.

In 2000, Charles Best, a teacher at a Bronx public high school, noticed how much his colleagues were spending out of pocket to support their students. He knew there were people who would want to help if they could see exactly where their money was going. That’s when he founded DonorsChoose, a platform where teachers could post requests for classroom resources, allowing donors to directly fund projects that matter.
Today, teachers from 89% of public schools in America have posted projects on DonorsChoose, and more than 6 million donors have contributed nearly $2 billion to fund classroom needs. From books to tech tools to art supplies, DonorsChoose has helped fund over 3 million projects, ensuring teachers have what they need to create engaging and inspiring environments for their students. It’s a true testament to what happens when communities rally behind educators.
When we learned more about DonorsChoose, we knew we wanted to partner with them to support teachers, the unsung heroes of our classrooms and communities. We are so proud to raise awareness about their organization and provide matching grants through their platform. In addition to raising awareness about their organization and providing matching grants through their platform, we’re excited to launch the Democracy Clothing Stock Your Closets Sweepstakes!
Here’s how it works: three teachers who enter will each win a $500 DonorsChoose gift card to stock up on classroom supplies, and 25 teachers will receive a $100 Democracy Clothing e-gift card to refresh their wardrobes with our comfy, stylish jeans. Trust us…DonorsChoose and Democracy Clothing are both teacher-approved!
Alyssa Kaplan, a Los Angeles public school elementary school teacher who had a DonorsChoose project funded knows firsthand the benefit of both:
"DonorsChoose is truly an incredible way to unite a community to support teachers. And, I love that they are teaming up with Democracy Clothing! As a kindergarten teacher, I’m constantly moving—squatting to be at eye level with my kiddos, tying shoes, sitting with them for circle time. Democracy jeans are so soft and comfortable; I get to feel stylish while still being able to move freely all day."
Teachers work hard to create magic in their classrooms, and we want to help them do it in style. Whether you’re participating in our Stock Your Closets Sweepstakes or spreading the word about DonorsChoose projects, you’re helping teachers to look good and feel good, while doing good for their students.
Let’s stock teachers’ closets—whether with classroom supplies or the perfect jeans, we’re here to support them every step of the way!

Mothers not only nurture the next generation but also cultivate ideas and movements that shape a better world. They are the visionaries who inspire change, the healers who mend hearts and the catalysts who bring communities together.
Sybrina Fulton's Circle of Mothers exemplifies this truth. During a dream one night, after the loss of her son Trayvon Martin, Sybrina saw in vivid detail a gathering of women laughing, crying, and supporting each other. They were each impacted by grief, but in coming together, began to heal and find a new way forward.
Upon waking, Sybrina assembled her inner circle…friends and family who listened to her share and then helped her make her vision real. Now in its 11th year, Circle of Mothers has provided solace and strength to hundreds of mothers, empowering them to create change within their own communities.
As volunteer Ambassadors for Circle of Mothers, we've witnessed the transformative power of this healing retreat firsthand. We’ve been in awe of Sybrina’s team and how they work together to make it all possible. This May, we're committed to expanding our support, by donating a portion of every purchase made and by inviting the Democracy community to help us spread the word.
Our collective support of Circle of Mothers honors the power of mothers this month. We’d also love to hear and celebrate your stories of impact. Has your motherhood journey inspired you to make a difference? Do you admire a mother who gathered her circle for positive action? Share your stories with us!

Did you know that many dedicated teachers dip into their own pockets to furnish their classrooms, ensuring their students have all the tools for success? It's true! From colorful markers to essential textbooks, these educators go above and beyond. With classroom sizes ballooning, these expenses can pile up fast. So, this Teacher Appreciation Week, why not show your gratitude with a gift that truly makes a difference? Consider donating much-needed school supplies—it's a gesture that speaks volumes about your appreciation for their hard work and dedication.
Art supplies can be especially useful to those teaching elementary school-aged children, think crayons, glue sticks, colored pencils, and construction paper. Your teacher may appreciate a donation of pencils, pens, highlighters, and notebooks. You might consider hygiene products as well because any classroom can always do with more hand sanitizer and tissues.
A little greenery in the classroom can serve as a nice bit of décor, but it can bring even more benefits to teachers (and their students). Plants are proven to increase productivity, boost your mood, and reduce stress and anxiety. However, if you’re thinking of giving an educator a plant, it’s crucial to be considerate of the impact it might have.
Low-maintenance plants are best, because you don’t want the teacher in your life to feel bogged down by a new responsibility. For example, jade plants are considered good luck and they – as well as other succulents – need very little care. Another great choice is a prayer plant, which represents gratitude, as it doesn’t require too much watering.
It can be hard to pick out a personalized gift for Teachers Appreciation Week when you aren’t sure what the recipient specifically wants or needs. That’s why a Democracy Clothing gift card is the perfect way to show your gratitude and ensure the teacher gets something they can really use.
Democracy Clothing acknowledges the importance of self-care and well-being for educators. Teaching can be emotionally and mentally taxing, and it's essential to prioritize their holistic health. At Democracy Clothing, we aspire to provide comfort, style, and confidence to teachers, allowing them to feel good inside and out as they navigate their demanding roles.
Writing a kind note of gratitude, letting them know all the amazing ways they’ve made an impact on you is always appreciated. Alternatively, if your child is still a student, have them write a kind letter or make a piece of art for their teacher. It’s something they will surely appreciate and treasure for years to come.
As we celebrate Teachers Appreciation Week, let us not forget the tireless dedication, passion, and sacrifices of teachers worldwide. They are the guiding lights who shape the future leaders, innovators, and change-makers of our society. Let us extend our gratitude, support, and recognition to these champions of education who make a difference every single day.
Let’s make sure the educators in our lives feel special this Teachers Appreciation Week! Ultimately, it’s the thought that counts.

]]>It has never been more important than now to think green when it comes to our fashion choices. And no, we don’t mean the color. Over the last few years, we at Democracy Clothing have committed to being part of the solution in moving toward a sustainable future and making it easier for our customers to do the same.
Through the use of REPREVE® fabrics, we’ve been able to support the decrease in carbon emissions, reduce the amount of non-biodegradable materials in our landfills, and keep you looking and feeling your best in every denim silhouette.
Democracy Clothing & Sustainability
Since denim is one of the categories of production that contributes to pollution, we have been seeking ways to minimize our impact on the planet as we continue to bring you great-looking styles. You know we’re all about our jeans, and because REPREVE® fabrics utilize recycled polyester in the construction of denim, their material became an easy choice for our eco-friendly “Ab”solution® line.
The health of our planet is as important to us as our principle of “Curve Equality,” and we thankfully haven’t had to sacrifice one for the other. By investing in our planet through our products with REPREVE® polyester, we can continue our sustainable growth journey without compromising on the quality or universal fit of our “Ab”solution® jeans.
What Makes Our Denim Made with REPREVE® Sustainable?
REPREVE® is the world’s leading brand of recycled performance fiber. Their materials are made sustainably from recycled plastic bottles to give new life to post-consumer plastics and reduce plastic pollution, having so far repurposed more than 40 billion plastic bottles (4,300 every minute).
Using recycled polyester rather than virgin polyester produces fewer carbon emissions, diverts plastic from ending up in our landfills or ocean, and it gives a second life to plastic bottles. By integrating more REPREVE® fabrications into our line of jeans, we are helping to make our body-friendly denim more planet-friendly, too.
The Same Great-Fitting Jeans, But Better for the Planet
When it comes to making eco-conscious decisions around fashion, we can all do our part. Opting for our REPREVE® denim bottoms allows you to look good and feel good while doing good, as each pair of our high-quality sustainable jeans is designed with the “Ab”solution® fit technology you know and love, mindfully made from trusted recycled content. We will continue to introduce a variety of styles crafted from REPREVE® fabrics that are flattering to the body and friendly to the planet.
We can all make a difference to the planet by forgoing fast fashion and investing in mindfully crafted products, designed to maximize your assets while reducing your carbon footprint.

This Women’s History Month, we celebrate the transformation and empowerment of trailblazing women who lead organizations like A New Way of Life Reentry Project (ANWOL). Founded in 1998 by Susan Burton, and led today by Co-Director Pamela Marshall, ANWOL stands as a beacon of hope for women seeking healing, renewal, and opportunity after incarceration.
A renowned criminal justice advocate, it was Susan’s past that became the fuel for her to chart a new course. Following the death of her 5-year-old son, the weight of her grief spiraled, causing her to cycle in and out of prison for nearly two decades. After being released from prison for the sixth time, she was finally able to access recovery services in an affluent area of Los Angeles County and became determined to bring these same services to women in areas plagued by poverty and over-incarceration.
In the face of rising incarceration rates, women find themselves with fewer resources and support systems than their male counterparts. Despite the recent 700% rise in the female prison population, only 4% of women in that population received outside help with reentry, while 90% of incarcerated men have access to that same help.
A New Way of Life has addressed that gap head-on and grown into an internationally recognized non-profit organization that promotes healing, leadership development, and recovery for formerly incarcerated women. In the two decades since its formation, ANWOL has provided housing to over 1,700 women and their children, reunited over 400 parents with their children, and provided pro bono legal services to over 4,000 formerly incarcerated individuals.
At Democracy Clothing, we resonate deeply with ANWOL's mission of caregiving, supporting women and instilling confidence. Our connection to ANWOL began last year with a visit to a neighboring LA location, where we treated the women on their staff to an “Ab”solution “Jean Whisperer” experience. That day, the female staff members, who so often care for others, had the experience of being taken care of themselves, personally fitted and gifted with Democracy Clothing.
Next, we welcomed several of their female residents, all mothers, to our Democracy Studio, where we helped them curate a new Democracy Clothing wardrobe, built on the principle of Curve Equality, and gave them a glam session with hair and makeup, followed by a confidence-building photo shoot. As it unfolded, they honored us by sharing their stories. Later, we featured one of the participants, Shaniah Stewart, as a Democracy model on our website and in a Jean Journey blog post, where Shaniah shared her commitment to become a social worker and help other women like her… a shining example of ANWOL’s impact.
ANWOL demonstrates what’s possible when women use lessons from their past to make transformational change for the future. In creating ANWOL, Susan has blazed a new trail, one that enables women like Shaniah and the others we met, to rebuild their lives after incarceration and chart their own empowered path ahead.
As we honor Women's History Month, join us in making history together by supporting ANWOL. Every Democracy Clothing purchase this month contributes to our collective effort to provide resources for formerly incarcerated women as they reintegrate into society and create brighter futures. You can also add-on your own donation at check-out. Visit our ANWOL page on our website to learn more and show your support.

At Democracy Clothing, we believe in the power of women to create positive change in the world. That’s why we spotlight and contribute to organizations and initiatives that help women overcome challenges and make a difference in their communities. Feeling good and looking good while doing good.
]]>It’s International Women’s Day again, so as we celebrate the important women in our lives, let’s also shine a light on this year’s IWD 2024 campaign theme: Inspire Inclusion. From embracing your own diversity to recognizing and celebrating others’, supporting women and girls in their achievements, and elevating female empowerment, everyone can take part in this important initiative.
There’s so much more we can accomplish when we do it collectively, so raise your voice, do your part, and let’s celebrate women in style this year! #IWD
We believe that, without inclusion, inspiration, and the determination of passionate, hard-working women, there would be no Democracy Clothing today. It’s for this reason that inspiring inclusion is an initiative that’s close to our hearts and we strive to forge a better world for women every day.
The Democracy Team is the life and heart behind our clothes. Our design, sales, business, and production teams are predominantly female and made up of talented individuals with a range of backgrounds and experiences. To maintain Democracy Clothing’s inclusivity, which in turn creates a sense of belonging, community, and promotes tolerance, it has been essential to focus on recruiting, retaining, and developing female talent. And it’s because of this team that we’re able to bring fashionable, high-quality clothing to our customers year after year.
Democracy Clothing was founded by Caren Lettiere on the principle of “Curve Equality,” which acknowledges that all shapes are different, but created equal. It’s because of this belief that we designed a jean that maximizes a woman’s shape by fusing together style, comfort and technology. What we want most for our customers is to feel seen and catered to, no matter their size, so they can always look and feel their very best.
Over the years, we have teamed up with changemaking women to empower and inspire the communities they serve. From non-profits to female-led groups, we are always proud to and humbled to dedicate our efforts and do our part to make a difference.
Some of the initiatives we have supported include A New Way of Life (ANWOL), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support for people women rebuilding their lives after incarceration; The Judy Fund, a non-profit organization that strives to raise awareness and dollars to fight women impacted by Alzheimer’s disease; Circle of Mothers, a group started by Trayvon Martin’s mother that aims to support mothers who are grieving the loss of a child to senseless violence.

When we hosted Shaniah and two other mothers from ANWOL at our Democracy Studio, we were impressed by her grace and courage. Witnessing her confidence blossom throughout the day, we also recognized her natural talent in front of the camera. We invited her back for a dedicated photo shoot and opportunity to share more with us about her story. Where do you call home?
I was born in Portland, OR but I’ve lived in California all of my life. My fondest memories were growing up in Carson, CA. Whenever I think about Carson or pass through, it feels like home.
Tell us some things about you
I’m what one would call a “girly girl”. I love fashion, makeup, hair, nails, all of that. However, growing up we didn’t have any extra money for me to have nice things. I learned how to budget at a young age and make use of what I had. I dream about the day I can go on a nice shopping spree for myself and also my children. I’m a mother of two boys and strive to live freely with them, provide them with the things I didn’t have and give them a good life.
At Democracy Clothing, we’re all about looking good and feeling good while doing good. What’s the “good” you’re doing in the world?
One thing I’ve always loved doing is making people laugh. There’s nothing like sharing a good laugh with someone; the kind where your belly hurts and you can’t catch your breath! Since becoming a resident at A New Way of Life, my future goals have changed. I now see myself working in re-entry, building relationships with other residents and using my life experience to help them along their journey. I’m currently in school to become a social worker because I want to bring compassion, empathy, and love to the world. I want to be for someone, what I’ve always wanted someone to be for me.
What pearls of wisdom do you have for other change-making women?
Believe in yourself. It sounds simple but it’s crucial. Plenty of times I made the wrong decisions in life because I didn’t believe I could be someone who is successful, so I wouldn’t try. Years went by and I realized I only held myself back. It’s easier to think that people, places, and things stop us from becoming who we want to be but change starts within. My goal is to work with women in different types of programs similar to A New Way of Life, giving them the type of support I was given here while reminding them, WE can do this!
What’s your biggest challenge when it comes to finding clothes that look good and feel good?
After having my children, I became really insecure about my body. Finding clothes that are flattering to my shape, where I don’t have to worry about holding my stomach in, and pants that really accentuate the good parts of my shape is my biggest challenge.
How has finding Democracy Clothing empowered you?
Finding Democracy Clothing was a wonderful experience. They have such an amazing team behind them who made me feel special when I met them. They were genuinely excited to dress me and brightened my day with their warm personalities and their passion for making people feel good in their clothes. I felt confident. I felt seen. It was a day to remember!
What’s your favorite Democracy jean and what do you love about it?
My favorite Democracy jean has turned out to be the “Ab”solution petite jegging. I put them on today with a pair of high-top chucks and I felt so comfortable and stylish. I have them in the color dark indigo. They’re perfect!
Democracy's core values are to embrace who you are, enhance what you got, elevate your confidence, and evolve your personal style. How have you embraced who you are at this stage of your life?
I’ve learned to take time for self-care. When I allow myself to practice self-care, I feel comfortable and confident with who I am. At this stage in my life, I’m embracing who I am because I choose to believe I am special, I have a purpose, and I am wonderfully made.
What are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of my resilience. I look back on how far I’ve come, and the possibilities of where I can go and it puts a smile on my face.
Where do you hope your jean journey will take you next?
I want to keep this confidence and take it with me wherever I go. My experience with Democracy Jeans has allowed me to live out a dream I had as a young girl of modeling. I hope to put on my jeans and know I can take on the world.
We’re so inspired by Shaniah’s story, her resilience, and her wisdom beyond her years. And we can’t wait to see the ripples of impact she’ll have for other women who are beginning again in their own ways. Our year began with the vibrant energy of the day-long Femmefluence Forum, Marketplace, and Dinner organized by entrepreneur Jennifer Kem and her visionary “unicorn team.” I spoke on a panel about women’s affluence and influence alongside incredible women business thought leaders. Our team helped all the women discover the confidence-building of Democracy jeans through a Try-On event like none other. And at dinner, we discussed what’s possible when women leaders intentionally champion one another. From start to finish, we immersed ourselves in a celebration of women's empowerment. In case you missed it, dive into the details of Femmefluence and the inspiring connections we made in this blog post.
In the spring, we focused our efforts on the Circle of Mothers Healing Retreat, organized by Trayvon Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton, raising awareness and dollars to support mothers who are grieving the loss of a child to senseless violence. Attending the retreat in Florida for our third time in person, we connected individually with each mother to hear their stories and help them find jeans that can bring them comfort and confidence in the midst of all they face. Along the way, we learned profound lessons about the power of presence, the resilience of joy, and the impact we can collectively make to heal and support one another. Learn more about our powerful experiences at the Circle of Mothers Healing Retreat in this blog post.
In between these powerful moments, we had the privilege of collaborating with A New Way of Life, an organization dedicated to supporting women formerly incarcerated in rebuilding their lives. Witnessing the transformative impact of our "jean whisperer" experience and the joy it brought to both the staff and the women they support was a testament to the revitalizing force of new beginnings and championing one another in community. Learn more about A New Way of Life at their website and stay tuned for a blog post about our collaboration in the new year.
As the fall season of 2023 unfolded, we reunited with The Judy Fund in a mission to combat Alzheimer's disease and its disproportionate impact on women. The Judy Fund Campaign became a shared effort, with your support propelling us to new heights, raising awareness and funds in the fight against this devastating disease. Relive the impactful moments of our Fall Judy Fund Campaign and the strides we took together in this blog post.
As we bid farewell to 2023, we extend our deepest gratitude to each one of you. Your involvement and inspiration have been the driving force behind our impactful initiatives. With the momentum we've built together, we're excited to continue our commitment to connection and empowerment. Here’s to changing lives in 2024…one pair of jeans at a time. Because caring is always fashionable.💙

Upland, CA
I’m the daughter of Cuban immigrants, born in New Jersey. I was a music major in college, but I also studied Spanish, Italian, French and German, while learning to sing in four additional languages. Following graduation, I worked as a classical soprano and performed in opera, oratorio, and music theater. After the birth of my second child, I began a new career as a fundraiser for local universities.
I was diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease in 2020 at age 62. My diagnosis forced me into an early retirement from a job I loved, but it also provided me with new opportunities. I volunteer at a senior memory care center, sing in three choirs and remain physically and socially active by practicing yoga, biking, golfing and taking a French class with friends. I also enrolled in a clinical trial that is evaluating the safety and efficacy of a new Alzheimer’s drug, donanemab, for individuals with preclinical Alzheimer’s disease. I’m hopeful it may slow the progression of my disease.
When I was working in colleges and universities, I always took the bull by the horn. I didn’t wait for the leader to give me an assignment…I gave them my suggestions of what we could or should do for the organization.
Overall, I say Be strong, Be honest with yourself and Be a changemaker. A lot of women don’t think of themselves that way.
Find and know your passion, and from your passion you will gain insight into being comfortable within your own body and soul. I will not allow this disease to hold me back. I will not hide. I plan to continue traveling and seeing the world.
I’m most proud of fighting this disease and not being afraid. Because my mother’s two sisters had Alzheimer’s, and I saw what it did to them, I had a hunch that I would follow in their paths. Despite that, it took a very long time for me to get my diagnosis. I think, because I can drive, speak, sing, cook, do house work, and volunteer, my doctors did not want to believe I had Alzheimer’s.
I’m also proud of being the mother of two amazing, grown-up sons who support me. I got my diagnosis during the beginning of COVID and wanted to tell both my sons about my diagnosis at the same time. So, I invited them to a Zoom call under the pretense of staying connected and that moment became the beginning of our weekly family call!
My husband and I traveled recently to Ireland where I sang with my choir. But, I still have a bucket list that includes more international travel and a visit to every major league ballpark! I also want to continue sharing my story, advocating for a cure, and helping people know that this isn’t just an “older person’s disease.” It’s important to help people realize that the disease impacts some communities disproportionately. Hispanic Americans are 1.5 times more likely to develop Alzheimer's than whites but they are only 18% more likely to be diagnosed.
In sharing my story, I hope I will encourage others to advocate for themselves in seeking and receiving an accurate diagnosis. I also intend to use my bilingual skills to help increase disease awareness and the availability of care and support resources in Hispanic communities. I want to do all I can to advance the awareness of this dreadful disease.
The Judy Fund is the largest and fastest-growing family fund at the Alzheimer’s Association®, leading the way in Alzheimer’s research for women like Myra.
A woman’s estimated lifetime risk of developing Alzheimer’s at age 45 is approximately 1 in 5 – twice what it is for men. Nearly two-thirds of the more than 6 million Americans living with the disease today are women. The disease has a disproportionate impact on women, but we do not yet understand why. We must change this.
Together, with the entire Democracy community, we can support The Judy Fund and be a vital part of this powerful movement to #EndAlz and its devastating impact on women. #DemocracyInAction

Two Founders, One Mission: Empowering Women to #EndAlz
Caren Lettiere, the visionary behind Democracy Clothing, established her groundbreaking lifestyle brand over a decade ago. Her mission was clear: to provide innovative fashion options, anchored in denim, for women of all shapes and sizes. Rooted in her background in political science and a desire to give back, Caren recognized the potential to extend her brand's commitment to women's well-being by supporting a greater cause.
Elizabeth Gelfand Stearns, shares a passion for women's empowerment, driven by a deeply personal connection to Alzheimer's disease. Elizabeth chairs The Judy Fund, a philanthropic organization she founded with her father 20 years ago to raise funds for women's brain research related to Alzheimer's. Having lost both her mother and grandmother to the disease, Elizabeth's dedication has been unwavering, enabling her to rally over 3000 donors nationwide and raise and grant $10 million dollars to the cause.
"Our goal is to change the trajectory of Alzheimer's disease by supporting research that leads to disease-modifying treatments. The disease has a disproportionate impact on women, but we do not yet understand why. That is what drives us to build a pipeline for women's brain research," explains Elizabeth.
Caren was also compelled to act because Alzheimer's affects not only the individuals suffering from it but also their caregivers, who are often women. "More than two-thirds of all caregivers for those living with Alzheimer's are also women. This intergenerational burden on women is something I knew we wanted to address."
We are currently in a transformational era in the battle against Alzheimer’s disease. We are working on better ways to detect Alzheimer's disease in the brain, along with FDA-approved drugs that slow down the progression of the disease. These drugs, along with lifestyle education (eating, sleeping, and exercise modifications) have put us on the road to Alzheimer’s survivorship.
This year, there are many ways to get involved:
We invite you to join us in making a significant impact in ending the devastating effects of Alzheimer's on women. Every step you take and every dollar you contribute advances the cause of empowering women and ultimately putting an end to Alzheimer's. Together, with Caren, Elizabeth, and the entire Democracy community, you can be a vital part of this powerful movement to #EndAlz.

]]>Where do you call home?
Richmond, VA (moved here 29 years ago and I am still a NYer at heart!)
Tell us some things about you
My passion for embracing the unknown began as an immigrant to the US (from Israel) at the age of 5. I have since realized that my life-altering pivotal points have come from jumping in with both feet, from meeting my husband Steve on a blind date to navigating raising a son with a rare form of dwarfism. Leaping out of my comfort zone has become the norm. I attribute our 26-year-old daughter Brooke's love of international travel and 23-year-old son Brandon's sense of adventure to my demonstration of leaning into curiosity. I firmly believe our kids are always watching, no matter their age (or ours!)
At Democracy Clothing, we’re all about looking good and feeling good while doing good. What’s the “good” you’re doing in the world?
By sharing my lived experience in helping Brandon live a fulfilling and independent life, I provide a glimpse of what is possible when we turn perceived or societal limitations into opportunities. It has been a journey of adversity, pain, cyberbullying, and uncertainty for Brandon as he lives in a world not designed for someone of his short stature (3'9''). But that has given way to innovating our own solutions, charting our own course, and realizing that just because things have not been done this way before does not mean 'no'. Giving people a look behind the scenes provides a sense of hope and a world of possibilities.
As Brandon's “Momager” (professionally I am his Chief of Staff), I helped him step onto the Tedx stage at the age of 15 and launch his full-time professional speaking business at 19 years old. Our mission today is to help widen the lens through which people see others, but most importantly, themselves. We truly feel that the antidote to bullying is helping others, especially youth, learn to embrace their uniqueness and celebrate who they are. This is the message behind Brandon's second book, A Kids Book About Self Love.
What pearls of wisdom do you have for other change-making women?
The beauty of being a woman is having a stronger sense of self as we mature and feel comfortable in our own skin. We can evolve by embracing our curves, using our voice to speak up about what matters to us, and sharing our perspectives and insights. No matter how old we are, there is always an opportunity to learn something new. An open mind coupled with a solutions-focused mindset, are ageless attributes.
What’s your biggest challenge when it comes to finding clothes that look good and feel good?
Comfort and fashion do not always go hand-in-hand. As women in new seasons of life, in my case empty nester, we still want to look cute. But, we cannot stand to feel constricted and uncomfortable in the clothes we wear. Finding items that look current, make us look put together, and enable us to move freely contributes to us showing up in the world as our best selves. Since I travel the country with Brandon on a regular basis and constantly need to lift his Segway mobility device, stretch is very important in my clothing. Democracy Jeans provide the flexibility I need to move, lift, stretch, and bend.
How did you discover Democracy Clothing? How has finding Democracy Clothing empowered you?
I love feeling a sense of belonging and I participate in several online groups. One of my favorites is a Travel Fashion Girls group. I’ve learned so much from the women there. Many have shared their favorite comfortable travel attire and I kept seeing Democracy jeans being mentioned. I purchased my first pair during the pandemic in Nov. 2021. I felt so great in those jeans and took them on several work trips as Brandon and I got back on the road for his speaking engagements. I even had the pleasure of meeting singer Andy Grammer wearing those jeans to a conference we attended!
What’s your favorite Democracy jean and what do you love about it?
I love my "Ab"solution High Rise Slim Straight Indigo Jeans - the frayed hem makes me feel current. I also love the Dark Indigo Jeggings as they are easy to dress up or down. Recently, I tried my first Democracy Scallop Fray Denim Skirt and loved that too! (Pictured: Top - Double Flutter Sleeve Ruffled Print Woven Top, Bottom - "Ab"solution® Scallop Fray Hem Blue Denim Skirt)
Democracy's core values are to embrace who you are, enhance what you got, elevate your confidence, and evolve your personal style. What advice do you have for becoming more comfortable and confident with who you are? How have you embraced who you are at this stage of your life?
One way to become more comfortable and confident with who we are is to treat ourselves with the grace and respect we give to those we love. Being intentional about our inner voice creates kindness and empathy that directly impacts how we show up. I have embraced who I am by enjoying this season of life by letting go of judgment and my inner critic, and realizing how much more adventure and joy is ahead of me!
What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my ability to meaningfully connect with others. I seem to consistently meet 'random’ strangers with whom I have deep conversations within minutes. I feel like we are all surrounded by fascinating people and opportunities, yet sometimes we are so caught up in getting to the next place that we are distracted from the current moment. It is a beautiful feeling to help others feel seen, heard, and know that they matter. Recognizing the humanity in each other helps us filter out the noise and chaos of our complicated world.
Where do you hope your jean journey will take you next?
I love to travel with my Democracy jeans and tops, as they provide a sense of comfort while helping me feel put together. This Fall, I am embarking on a women's mission trip to Morocco and look forward to wearing my jeans on the long flights. Feeling fashionable and relaxed in our clothing provides an ease of travel, whether our excursions take us out of the country or to run errands.
Sylvia Farbstein's story, and the lessons she shares, highlight the power of authenticity, an adventurous spirit, and a mother's love and resilience. Embracing the unknown as an immigrant and navigating the challenges of raising a son with a rare form of dwarfism, Sylvia's determination is truly inspiring. She reminds us to lean into curiosity, embrace our true selves, and never underestimate the strength of a compassionate heart.

Dear Democracy Family,
We write to you with gratitude and humility to share some highlights of our experience at this year’s Circle of Mothers Healing Retreat and the lessons we learned from it.
While it was our third year volunteering and contributing jeans, it was the 10th year Circle of Mothers has provided healing for mothers who’ve faced the unimaginable: the death of a child to senseless violence. What began as a literal dream Sybrina Fulton had one night after the loss of her own son, Trayvon Martin, has grown into an annual retreat of enduring depth and connection.
When we arrived this year to the Florida beachfront hotel, it felt like a homecoming. We were immediately greeted by the other Ambassadors, family and friends of Sybrina’s inner circle, who dedicate themselves to making the weekend run smoothly and showering the mothers with care. Dressed in Democracy jeans themselves, these women over the years have become like friends to us too.
They showed us to the room where we would welcome the mothers for their Jean Try-On experience and we started setting up. Then, mothers began to enter. Some who had given up on wearing jeans years ago were skeptical. Others showed immediate excitement. One by one, we would connect with each mother, get a sense of their personal style, and direct them to a starting pair and size to try. As they exited the dressing room, they’d look in the mirror, often with delight and a new sense of swagger. If the size and style wasn’t quite right, we would encourage them to try a new pair, insistent that they leave with something that lights them up.
On route to and from the dressing room and the mirror, some amazing things would happen. We would begin to hear their stories. Stories about their relationship with their bodies. Stories of their children, the ones they lost. Stories of their grandchildren, the ones who tell them they are too old to wear jeans but will now be proven wrong! We heard about court dates for trials. And foundations created to make a difference in their communities.
Feeling the comfort of our jeans, something we’ve begun to call “the jean embrace,” some would begin to cry. Others, especially those who came into the room with other mothers who have become like sisters year after year, giggled and laughed, feeling amazing in the jeans, cheering each other on and dancing a little jig. Sometimes they would give us a hug. Sometimes we would offer one. There was laughter, tears and everything in between.
One of the most profound lessons we learned was of the transformative power of simply being present. Our care and support in listening to these mothers’ stories, while helping them discover their favorite pair of jeans, could of course never take away their pain. But our attention and interest in witnessing them in their full humanity, as mothers and as women, made an impact. We discovered that the act of truly seeing and acknowledging someone's grief can offer solace and remind them that they are not alone. In those moments, we experienced the healing power of human connection.
Even in the midst of grief, we saw so many moments of happiness and laughter. These mothers, who have experienced unimaginable loss, taught us the importance of reclaiming joy. Especially in their physical bodies, which had endured so much, we saw what was possible when the women put on the jeans and felt comfortable, supported and confident. Their resilience and ability to find moments of lightness reaffirmed our belief in the human spirit's capacity to heal, feel whole, and find solace in community. The loss of a child does not mean that you need to lose yourself.
The Circle of Mothers taught us the power of collective action. Individually, we may feel powerless, but together, we can create meaningful change. Witnessing the ways these mothers mobilize their grief into advocacy and action inspired us to reflect on how we can contribute. We saw that coming with jeans, helping women personally find their favorite, and most importantly, opening our hearts to them in the process mattered. We realized that our actions, no matter how small, can have a profound impact. Through their example, we were reminded that change begins with each one of us.
We hope these reflections give you some small sense of the power of these mothers, of the depth of connection possible when community comes together to heal, and how we each can play some part in making a difference. We invite you to learn more and to join our effort. Whether raising money through making a purchase at our website (where $1 of every order placed in the month of May goes to Circle of Mothers) adding on a donation at checkout, reading the story of Circle of Mothers alum Taun Hall in this post, or sharing about our month-long campaign on social media, you can have an impact too.
With appreciation,
Democracy's Circle of Mothers' Ambassadors:

Recently, we had an opportunity to visit Taun Hall, one of the women we met last year at Circle of Mothers, at her home in Walnut Creek, California. Taun shared with us about her life and the lessons she has learned about feeling good in her body. She also told us about how she has turned pain into purpose since the loss of her son Miles, who was shot and killed by police during a mental health crisis in 2019. Whether rallying her community in her own city or fighting for legislative change in the state of California, Taun’s journey is a powerful example of democracy in action and of the inspiring women who are touched by Circle of Mothers.
I’m a wife, a mother. I love my kids. Friends and family are important to me. I like meeting new people and learning about their lives. People always say that I am inclusive and bring community together. I believe that making connections is a gift and this has helped me build an incredible community of advocates who are now volunteers and friends supporting The Miles Hall Foundation.
In the wake of my son's tragic death, I've become a passionate advocate for the mentally ill and their families. Through my experience, I’ve learned that having a family member with mental illness should be shared with others around you. We need each other to understand the resources available and to move through the challenges together. We cannot do this alone.
Part of why we’ve grown so much in the advocacy work we’ve done since Mile’s death is because we have created real community here in Walnut Creek. Working together, we founded the Miles Hall Foundation. Our mission is to educate communities to reduce stigma and bias surrounding mental illness and prevent criminalization and excessive use of force by law enforcement during mental health emergencies. One of our key areas of focus has been the passage of The Miles Hall Lifeline Act in CA- AB 988, a bill providing for an alternative to calling 911 and providing for crisis responders to be trained mental health professionals and peers instead of law enforcement. The Bill was signed into law in September 2022 and now we continue to advocate to ensure its ongoing funding and implementation.
My experience at the Circle of Mothers was powerful. There were so many moms who have all lost a child and we were able to come together and heal. Sybrina and her team do such a thoughtful job of giving us our space to be in the moment and also allow us to find comfort and community with one another, get pampered, and focus on self-care and growth. We are all in different stages of our grief and yet the huge holes we have in our hearts is a common thread. I was incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be surrounded by people who could understand and support me.
I also discovered Democracy Clothing at Circle of Mothers and was touched by how there were jeans for every mother there, no matter their body size or shape. I was moved by the generosity to help grieving mothers feel good in their bodies. If you have clothes that look right and you feel good about yourself, you can hold your head up a little higher, with more confidence.
This was just one example of the special ways that Circle of Mothers surrounds us with care.
I have learned that I am beautiful in the skin I'm in. For the longest time I haven't embraced my body and I'm learning to love myself and appreciate all it does for me. I think I am becoming more comfortable because I now look back at pictures and I realize how beautiful I am and have always been. I’m also learning more and more to live in the moment, even if it isn't perfect.
I’ve learned you need to trust your own instincts and not waver from your own intuitive guidance. Everyone will have ideas of what you should do and where you should do it and so it’s easy to lose your way. You always have to come back to “does this feel right for you?” Trust that you know your journey.
I hope my jean journey will support me as I continue to face barriers as I fight for justice for Miles. I also hope it will allow me to find new ways to honor Miles and what a creative person he was. On the fourth anniversary of his death this May, at the end of Mental Health Awareness Month, we are hosting a virtual “Say His Name” event. Right now, we’re sharing far and wide a call for artists to Speak it Out, Draw or Paint It Out, Sing It, Rap it Out, and Create It Out to break the stigma about mental health and to decriminalize it.
Democracy Clothing is honored to know and share the stories of Circle of Mothers participants like Taun Hall. To learn more about Taun’s advocacy work, visit The Miles Hall Foundation Website and follow @themileshallfoundation on Instagram. Throughout May, $1 of every order placed at democracyclothing.com will be donated to Circle of Mothers and women like Taun. At checkout, in addition to knowing $1 of every order will support mothers to attend the retreat, you'll also have the option to add a donation of your own or visit the Circle of Mothers website to contribute directly.

That's exactly what happened at an inspiring “Femmefluence” celebration we had the honor of participating in last month. The day-long event included a Forum, Marketplace, and Dinner, organized by San Francisco Bay-Area based Brand Futurist, Serial Entrepreneur and Women’s Advocate Jennifer Kem (also known as a fierce Democracy Itty-Bitty Boot fan!)
Jen’s Femmefluence platform, which includes gatherings like this one and her Femmefluence Radio show, elevates values-driven women who are ready to dive deep into wealth, power, and leadership – while inviting everyone to take a seat at the table.
Speaking to our Values
During this event, Jen and her incredible “unicorn” team organized panels of leaders who shared their views on the Femmefluence brand values: connection, imperfection, intersectionality, ambition, and autonomy. The motto of the movement? "Our Affluence + Our Influence = Femmefluence."
On one of the panels, Democracy Clothing’s founder and President Caren Lettiere had the honor of sharing her journey. "I enjoyed being included in the thought leadership of the amazing panel of women who come from diverse backgrounds, perspectives and accomplishments," she said. "The common thread was the awareness of how we, change-making women, can consciously have a positive impact on each other’s businesses. That is the essence of femmefluence, to use our agency to educate, support and prop up women-founded, owned and led businesses.”
As women we see the world differently and that is where real change can come from. At Democracy we stand behind the principle of “Curve Equality,” which acknowledges that all shapes are different, but created equal, inspiring us to design a jean that maximizes a woman’s shape by fusing together style, comfort and technology. After all, as Caren Lettiere shared on the panel, "Despite our differences, ultimately, we’re all just women trying to zip up a pair of jeans. But when a woman feels confident in her skin and her jeans, she walks into a room like this one and her presence is felt. Her words create a shift, and her ability to connect with other women on a mission creates ripples of good in the world.”
The Marketplace: A Jean Try-On Like None Other
After the eye-opening panels, we participated in the Marketplace, setting up a changing area where the women tried on the curated styles, and the Democracy team of "jean whisperers" worked their magic to ensure the perfect fit. There was something empowering about this impactful connection that we shared with all of the women, who experienced the unexpected camaraderie of trying on great-fitting jeans in community.
As Caren reflected after the event, "I especially loved the joy that I witnessed, reconnecting women who had consciously 'uncoupled' with jean wearing. Their elation and surprise in rediscovering jeans was magical to experience and is the inspiration behind the brand. When women feel supported, comfortable and good in their skin/jeans, it gives them the extra confidence boost to continue to blaze trails on their journey toward continued growth and success."
Jadah Sellner, author of the recently launched She Builds: The Anti-Hustle Guide to Grow Your Business and Nourish Your Life, acknowledged how much the jeans match her commitment to authenticity and ease saying "I loved trying on different styles of Democracy Clothing jeans! So, so, so comfy + stylish. My fave jeans for sure." Professional speaker and speaker coach Chantelle Adams, shared that “Democracy Jeans embody the experience of the Femmefluence day, where every woman, of all shapes, sizes, backgrounds and cultures, were all celebrated and honored.”
Women Making History
We're grateful to be in rooms full of women, who lead with heart and have bold missions and fierce love for helping other women rise (while feeling amazing in a pair of jeans!). As we close out Women’s History Month, we felt it would be perfect to share this powerful Femmefluence experience with you and a reminder that when we come together to honor a woman’s vision and her story, we shape the future together!
To learn more about Jennifer Kem, check out this past blog post where we featured her story or visit her Femmefluence website page. For images from the event, see our post on Instagram @democracyclothing.

For Democracy Clothing founder, Caren Lettiere, these statistics are personal. She lost her own grandfather to Alzheimer’s and recognizes that this disease could further affect her family as well as many others in the Democracy customer community. Democracy has been devoted to helping women feel vital and empowered in their skin. But how can you feel vital if you can’t remember who you are?
When we decided we must do something to change the course of Alzheimer’s, Caren turned to her college friend Elizabeth Gelfand Stearns, who lost her own grandmother and mother to Alzheimer’s. Elizabeth serves as Chair of The Judy Fund, a philanthropy named in honor of her mother, which has raised more than $9 million in donations in support of Alzheimer’s research. The Judy Fund is the largest and fastest-growing family fund at the Alzheimer’s Association®, leading the way in Alzheimer’s research for women.
Are you ready to make a difference in the fight against Alzheimer’s?
As proud supporters of The Judy Fund, a movement dedicated to eliminating Alzheimer’s disease, we want to ensure that we help preserve precious memories and celebrate the women who provide love and care to those affected this holiday season. In that giving spirit, Democracy participated in the Judy Fund's Walk to End Alzheimer's in October. In addition, throughout the month of November, leading up to Giving Tuesday, Democracy will contribute $1 of every purchase at our website to the Judy Fund.
We’re pleased to introduce you to Elizabeth and share her Jean Journey. Read on to learn more about Elizabeth’s change-making advocacy work as Chair of The Judy Fund. Then, join Democracy in contributing, by adding on to any of your purchases this month and raising money or donating at our Team Democracy for the Judy Fund page. The person who raises or contributes the most money by end of Giving Tuesday will win a $500 website credit and one-on-one styling session with our brand founder. Together we can raise money that can end the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s on women.
Elizabeth Gelfand Stearns’ Jean Journey
Where do you call home?
Santa Monica, California
Tell us some things about you!
I’ll start my Jean Journey by saying I wear many hats! I’m a wife of 38 years, extremely proud mom of three, independent film producer, foundation director, gardener, traveler, jean lover, women’s advocate, UCLA alum, storyteller, daughter, friend.
After 25 years working at Paramount and Universal Pictures, I struck out on my own as an independent film producer. My advocacy work in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease brought me to Lisa Genova, the award-winning author of “Still Alice,” a New York Times bestselling novel, which changed the way people think about the disease. We went on to produce a feature film starring Julianne Moore that centered around a 50-year-old woman’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. I coproduced the project, not just because it was an important story that we’d get to tell in a really engaging way; I picked it because I lost both my mother’s and my grandmother’s brains to Alzheimer’s disease. I was very motivated to make a film about what it must feel like to have that disease.
In addition to producing projects for film and television, I also serve as the Chair of The Judy Fund, a philanthropic foundation my father named in memory of my mother in 2003. Through The Judy Fund, we raise and grant money in support of Alzheimer’s disease research in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association.
At Democracy Clothing, we’re all about looking good and feeling good while doing good. What’s the “good” you’re doing in the world?
As the Chair of The Judy Fund, we raise and grant funding for Alzheimer's disease research with a focus on women's brain research. Our goal is to change the trajectory of Alzheimer's disease by supporting research that leads to disease modifying drugs that will usher in the era of Alzheimer's survivorship.
Our focus is on women's brains and Alzheimer's, as the disease has a disproportionate impact on women — two-thirds of people over 65 years of age who have Alzheimer’s disease are women. But we do not know why. That is what drives us to build a pipeline for women’s brain research — the same thread that drove me to help bring “Still Alice” to movie theaters worldwide.
What pearls of wisdom do you have for other change-making women?
Find your thread and keep pulling it along. Don’t be afraid to step out and find the thing you love to do, and put a lot of time and energy into making that thing happen.
What’s your biggest challenge when it comes to finding clothes that look good and feel good?
Finding the sweet spot between clothing and styles that I like to wear and what looks good on me (or at least what I think looks good!). My life can take me in different directions, so I need clothing that works with a fast-paced, flexible, layered lifestyle. For me, that means classic casuals in high quality fabrics, clean neutral colors (love my reds and blues, too), and soft, comfortable styles. Comfort is everything!
How has finding Democracy Clothing empowered you?
I’m so glad that Caren and I found each other all those years ago at UCLA. I am so lucky to team up with Democracy Clothing to shine a light on women's brain health — raising awareness and funds to support women's brain research and Alzheimer's disease. This work continues to allow me to pull at that thread, great storytelling/meaningful work/women’s brains….and looking and feeling good in my Democracy clothes!
What’s your favorite Democracy jean? What do you love about it?
I love my caper-colored Democracy "Ab"solution utility cargo jeans —
great fit, comfort and style!
What advice do you have for becoming more comfortable and confident with who you are? How have you embraced who you are at this stage of your life?
For me, embracing maturity was all about self-awareness: the ability to look inward and be reflective about myself and the impact that I have on others. I admit, it’s a path that took aging and time for me to comfortably walk down. Now I try to make the journey about joy and appreciation, even when — especially when — things are truly difficult.
I learned many valuable lessons from my mother, Judy, including the ability to look at life every day with a sense of joy and appreciation for the things around me. I try to share that appreciation with my family.
What are you most proud of?
Truly, I am most proud of our three remarkable children (and their partners). Richard and I have been married for 38 years, and are parents to Greg (married to Gabriella), Jackie (engaged to Spencer), and Ella. Throughout their lives, they have taught me great lessons and have made me a better mom. I am proud of my professional accomplishments, particularly The Judy Fund, for sure. But the real treasure to me is the family Richard and I have built, and the community of family and friends that we are a part of.
Where do you hope your jean journey will take you next?
I can hardly believe I just turned 60. Every day, I charge full steam ahead into the third chapter of my life. Aging can be fearful, but I have chosen to try to approach each new hurdle as it comes. I want to continue to grow, surrounding myself with family and friends I love, bringing them along with me as much as possible. And my fave comfortable jeans are certainly a part of the journey!

In a new series for the Democracy Blog, we’re excited to showcase the places and ways that you are making a difference on the job in your Democracy Clothing! As this academic year ends, we acknowledge all the adults like Lena who helped care for children and bring everyday magic to their school day.
Where do you live?: Alameda, CA
Why did you become a crossing guard?:
I was looking for a role as a part-time teacher or nanny to help make ends meet. I loved the flexibility it gave me to be with my children and pursue my passion as a self-published author.
What most surprised you about the job?:
How much I love it! I’ve been able to build meaningful relationships with children and families and give input to the city about how to help improve the area and roads.
What’s the special touch you bring to the role?:
I wanted to spark some joy and creativity in the midst of the pandemic. By using chalk on the sidewalk, I started leaving jokes, hopscotch, affirmations and questions to engage the children and families and make the walk to and from school more interesting.
What was the most memorable thank you message you received?:
I’ve received so much appreciation from children and adults. One child/family gave me a keychain with a stop sign; the boy said to me “this is so you don't forget me” and his mom shared how he now wants to be a crossing guard.
What do you wear on the job?:
My highlighter yellow vest, whistle, comfy shoes, and my Democracy jeans have become my uniform. Being able to bend, play hopscotch, bike to work and walk in comfort in Democracy feels so good!
Lena is pictured above in our Puff Elbow Sleeve Dotimal Printed Tee &"Ab"solution® Light Blue Denim Chewed Hem Ankle Skimmer.
You can follow Lena’s adventures as a Mom, author and crossing guard on IG @crossingguardchronicles. Her books can be found on Amazon. Stay tuned for the latest book that she’s writing this summer “Diary of a Crossing Guard!”
At Democracy Clothing, we’re inspired by change-making women. And we’re committed to amplifying the stories of women like Sybrina Fulton, who has dedicated her life to transforming tragedy into change since the death of her son Trayvon in 2012. Moving from pain to purpose, Sybrina founded the Trayvon Martin Foundation and began the Circle of Mothers as a place for mothers who, like Sybrina, have experienced the unfathomable - the loss of a child to senseless gun violence - to come together and support one another.
Three years ago, Democracy Clothing founder Caren Lettiere witnessed firsthand the restorative power of the Circle of Mothers as an Ambassador and provided the gift of comfort and support through the donation of “Ab”solution jeans to all the mothers. This year, in addition to volunteering at the weekend retreat and contributing jeans, the Democracy Team is honored to raise awareness and funds to support Circle of Mothers through a month-long campaign.
Read on to learn more about Sybrina’s change-making work in the first of a new series on the blog focused on women and social impact. We hope you’ll be inspired as we are by what Sybrina has made possible through Circle of Mothers and that you’ll join us in supporting this year’s transformative healing retreat.
Ten years after the death of her son, Sybrina Fulton is more determined than ever to make sure other mothers grieving the loss of their child can find comfort, healing and empowerment in community with one another. Just days before her annual Circle of Mothers Healing Retreat, with the support of family members and volunteers equally committed to the cause, Sybrina is laser-focused, attending to every detail of the weekend.
From her deeply personal opening remarks to the carefully curated gifts each mother receives, between the Friday night pajama party designed to break the ice, the healing session on Saturday and the Sunday morning prayer service where each child is honored, there is magic in the sequence of events. There is love and understanding poured into each moment.
The inspiration for her vision came when she was least expecting it, one night in a dream, where she was at a gathering of women laughing, crying, hugging and speaking.
Upon reflection, Sybrina realized the experience of the dream was everything she needed after her loss. “When my son was tragically killed, there was no program like Circle of Mothers. There was no retreat, there was no anything that I was involved in or invited to, where I could be with other mothers who understood my pain.”
Emboldened by her dream, Sybrina got up and started writing notes as if she had already attended this retreat. Soon after, Sybrina gathered her team and got to work creating the retreat as the support network she needed as she navigated grief and loss in her own life.
Since then, Circle of Mothers has welcomed over 250 women over the course of the last seven years. Though each mother has their own unique story to tell of how senseless gun violence took the life of their child, they are united by a love that endures and a spark to impact change in their communities. After Circle of Mothers, they have gone on to create community initiatives of their own, and even run for public office.
One such mother, who attended the healing retreat in 2019, the same year Democracy became involved, is Shirl Baker. Her beautiful daughter DeEbony Groves was 21 years old when she was shot and killed during a shooting that took the lives of DeEbony and three other people at a Waffle House in Antioch, Tennessee .
When she arrived at Circle of Mothers, a year after her loss, she was still reeling and numb. The first night she sat next to Sybrina and was immediately touched by her kindness and compassion. She remembers saying to Sybrina that night “thank you for pursuing your dream.” After a weekend of healing laughter and tears, education and inspiration, Shirl left with a network of other women she could lean on and a conviction to create a foundation of her own.
Three years later, Shirl’s DeEbony Groves Foundation’s mission is to restore hope for the future and provides the same kind of comfort and support she received to mothers in the Tennessee area. The mothers who arrive to her annual event have children whose tragic stories don’t make the news, but in the company of others and Shirl Baker, know that their child is not forgotten.
Shirl believes DeEbony, who was weeks away from graduating with a degree in social work when she died, would be proud of the work she’s doing to help other mothers. Every Sunday on her way back from church, Shirl stops by DeEbony’s grave where she will share news about what she’s creating and ask for guidance. She knows she is keeping her daughter’s legacy alive.
Shirl is grateful every day for the ways that Sybrina and Circle of Mothers opened windows and doors for her and the other mothers she has grown to love at the healing retreat. She speaks daily to many of them and several traveled out of state to volunteer at her annual event and provide support. They are members of a club they didn’t want to join. But they have learned to make the best of their tragedy, following in Sybrina’s purposeful path and turning pain into purpose.
Democracy Clothing is honored to know mothers like Sybrina Fulton and Shirl Baker to share their stories. We hope you’ll join the Democracy family in supporting Sybrina’s dream realized in the Circle of Mothers. Throughout the month of May, customers can add on a donation for Circle of Mothers on any purchase at democracyclothing.com.
All donations will support the expenses of this May’s healing retreat, bringing together 100 grieving mothers from across the country. Together, we can help these mothers, who have experienced the worst tragedy, to find comfort and empowerment with one another and turn their pain into purpose.
Beyond her work in hosting and shaping Circle of Mothers, Sybrina and her team at the Trayvon Martin Foundation offer a youth summit and summer camp that reaches up to 1200 kids a year. She has also become a powerful public speaker and writer, completing a second book about her family’s experience. And she recently led the way toward a 10-year memorial for the Trayvon Martin Foundation. I have had the privilege of living on both East and West coasts but two years ago decided to move back to my native home, Los Angeles, to start a new phase in my life.
Tell us some things about you!
Growing up, I struggled with undiagnosed dyslexia, ADHD and memory retention issues that impacted my confidence at school, but at home I found fulfillment and confidence in pursuing my creativity. As an adult, another source of joy was becoming a mother to an amazing son and daughter. But motherhood also came with challenges. Raising my children, primarily as a single mom, I was forced to become resourceful and create all kinds of side hustles in order to financially support my family. Before there was such a thing as Airbnb, I rented a room in our home. I capitalized on my love of exercise by teaching spin classes and leading mountain bike tours. I organized people’s homes and sold tupperware and skin care products and built a salon in my basement so I could grow my hairstyling business from home. Ultimately, I discovered my passion for jewelry-making.
My new business, Judabud Jewelry, has become the greatest outlet for my creativity, enabling me to make handmade pieces that symbolize the change my clients seek. Using precious metals and gemstones, I create custom design jewelry, with powerful symbolism, using an intricate hand-carving technique known as Lost-wax casting.
At Democracy Clothing, we’re all about looking good and feeling good while doing good. What’s the “good” you’re doing in the world?
Raising my transgender daughter Corey in the 1990’s, when even the term “transgender” was not well known, was an incredibly scary and challenging time. With an unwavering eye on the ball and fierce mama bear mentality, I made sure Corey knew she was loved and that we would get the support and information we needed so she could become her most authentic self.
Our experience sparked a deep desire in me to help other families so they don’t have to feel so alone. It’s overwhelming when your child is unique, you want to do everything you can to become educated and guide them over their particular hurdles, but don’t know where to find the answers you seek. Corey and I are both committed to sharing our experience to help families increase understanding, access resources and move through these kinds of transitions, so children can embrace who they are and advocate for themselves.
I also believe that no matter where we are in life, one has the ability to give back. The expansion of Judabud Jewelry will give me the opportunity to give back in a new way, with a commitment to donate a portion of proceeds to charities that help children and youth pursue their authentic path.
What pearls of wisdom do you have for other change-making women?
When I work with families, I always emphasize the importance of not allowing fear to make decisions for you. We need to recognize the fear that’s stopping us, acknowledge it, and then move past it. I highlight the importance of staying true to your instincts and not allowing other people’s negativity or judgment to influence your decisions.
What’s your biggest challenge when it comes to finding clothes that look good and feel good?
My biggest challenge is learning to embrace my body at an older age as I’m going through menopause. As my shape continues to change, I’m working on adapting alongside it and appreciating my whole self, not just my body. Also, because my career is multi-faceted, I need versatile clothing, like my favorites from Democracy, that can work for me whether I’m taking meetings, on my feet with clients, or at my workbench creating jewelry.
What’s your favorite Democracy jean and what do you love about it?
My absolute favorite pair of Democracy Jeans are the “Ab”solution Itty Bitty Boot Embroidered Pocket Jean. They help in all the right places and are super soft. The wash of the jeans is perfect because you can dress them up or dress them down. The back pockets are super handy and fashionable.
Democracy's core values are to embrace who you are, enhance what you got, elevate your confidence, and evolve your personal style. What advice do you have for becoming more comfortable and confident with who you are? How have you embraced who you are at this stage of your life?
On a personal level, I’ve learned to become the “CEO of Me,” to set boundaries aligned to my goals, and to pursue my dreams, even when a new opportunity feels scary. With each step I take, my confidence, connection to my inner strength and my creativity grows. And when it comes to living true to my most authentic self, the details count.
What are you most proud of?
Any time someone asks me this question, my first thought and what I visualize are my children. For most of their childhood, I was a single parent and I’m very proud of the time and effort I put into being present for my kids because they are happy, thriving, and extraordinary individuals. My son just married the love of his life, is finishing up his Masters program in Social Work and plans to start a family of his own soon. My daughter is an activist, model, writer, and is now following her dreams of becoming an actress. Her story of becoming the first transgender prom queen was written into a screenplay and is currently in pre-production as a feature film.
Where do you hope your jean journey will take you next?
My journey will take me to building awareness of my jewelry business so that when someone wears one of my pieces, they not only appreciate its beauty but connect to the meaning behind the piece and feel empowered. My hope is that through design, I can help other people get through tough transitions and find inspiration within. This year, I’m releasing a new collection called “Rae,” inspired by my daughter Corey. Drawing on the theme of a “bud,” the collection represents the beginning of one’s journey to embracing their individuality. I also hope to complete my memoir, "Back to Blank" about raising a transgender child in a time that very few resources were available and how I overcame my disabilities and tapped into my strengths to reclaim my life.
Thanks to Democracy Clothing, that truth was everywhere at the recent She Podcasts Live 2021 conference in Scottsdale, Arizona. The annual conference is the first-of-its-kind showcase of female and female-identifying voices in podcasting. Like Democracy’s mission of Curve Equality — which boldly declares that all shapes are different, but created equal — She Podcasts believes every woman’s voice is unique, beautiful and worthy of reaching its fullest potential. So when the opportunity arose for Democracy to partner with this active, vocal, inclusive audience, we knew they’d be a perfect fit.
We understand from experience that all it takes is one pair, one wear of our “Ab”solution jeans to convert anyone into a Democracy die-hard. So Democracy partnered with She Podcasts Live to offer all of their keynote speakers, volunteers and VIP attendees a complimentary pair of expertly styled “Ab”solution jeans to wear to the conference.
The idea to bring Democracy to She Podcasts Live came from Julie Neale, host of the Mother’s Quest Podcast and Democracy Clothing brand ambassador, who also happens to be the sister of Democracy's founder, Caren Lettiere. “I was certain this would be an aligned partnership," she said. "She Podcasts helps us connect to our voice and message and Democracy helps us connect to our confidence and empowerment. I knew that experiencing Democracy jeans, which helps us embrace who we are, could be transformative for the She Podcasts community," she said.
VIP speaker, attendee and host of The Pillars, the Porch and the Path podcast Halicue Hanna agreed: “I’m so glad She Podcasts Live brought Democracy jeans and me together,” she said. “As a brand, Democracy is a really good fit, and not just for She Podcasts Live as a diverse and inclusive space. Democracy Clothing is a good fit for women like me, who don’t always fit in the ‘standard’ anything,” Halicue said. “Honestly, the second I put my Democracy jeans on I thought, ok these are my people. They see me. These jeans feel like my body size. I absolutely love wearing them.”
The show’s organizers, co-founders Jessica Kupferman and Elsie Escobar couldn’t agree more. The two audio pioneers founded She Podcasts — and the resulting 20k+ membership group and women-centric podcasting conference of the same name — with a mission to democratize female voices within the heavily male dominated world of podcasting. As their influence grew, so did their visibility.
“All of our sponsors are trying to truly engage our audience of highly vocal, highly influential women. For She Podcasts, it’s important to make sure all the companies we partner with align with our values of diversity, inclusion, equality, equity,” explained Jessica Kupferman, CEO and Co-founder of She Podcasts. “So when we heard about Democracy Clothing I was super excited to try them. And you know what? These jeans are legit,” she said.
High praise from Kupferman — a notoriously hilarious podcaster who has earned a huge industry following for her tell-it-like-it-is on-air authenticity.
It’s a sentiment she repeated while wearing a pair of figure-flattering boot-cut Democracy jeans alongside her co-founder, Elsie Escobar wearing dark skinny jeans on the main stage at She Podcasts Live 2021: “I mean look at us — we are a carrot (her) and a cabbage (me) — and we both look great in Democracy jeans.”
Are you ready to experience the life-changing magic of Democracy jeans?
We’re humbled to be a small part of an important mission to help more women share their voices with the world — and by becoming the go-to jeans for leaders like Elsie, Jess, and all the She Podcasts Live attendees. To learn more about She Podcasts, a weekly conversation between co-founders Elsie and Jess sharing the latest tips, gossip and industry insights, check out their website, Instagram, Facebook and their select group of members called the Super Squad.
If you’re inspired by She Podcasts to raise your voice to make change in the world, feeling confident from the bottom up can make a big difference. Shop here to build your own solid foundation by picking out a pair of “Ab”solution jeans for yourself.

Where do you call home?
Boulder, CO
Tell us some things about you!
In my professional life, I am a Financial Therapist and lead a year-long money school and global community, The Art of Money. My first book, The Art of Money: A Life-Changing Guide to Financial Happiness, was published in 2016.
My husband and I have been together for 20 years and we continue to grow together in life, parenting and business. I’m an older mom. My son was born just shy of my 40th birthday and he is 12 now, so that’s been part of my personal journey, too.
I grew up dancing, and dreamed of becoming a Solid Gold dancer on TV (the 80s were a lot of fun!). After that I wanted to be a business woman, and then, eventually, I decided I wanted to become a psychotherapist after I started going to therapy as a teen. And now here I am!
At Democracy Clothing, we’re all about looking good and feeling good while doing good. What’s the “good” you’re doing in the world?
In my work as a Financial Therapist, I’ve created a compassionate approach to a topic that is usually taught with a lot of tough love. My methodology teaches folks how to have a healthy and savvy relationship with money and all that it touches in our lives.
I’ve spent many years refining these lessons, teaching in diverse and inclusive groups for twenty years - and I will continue to fine-tune this work until the day I die. Money is such a taboo topic even though it plays such a vital role in our lives. We need new creative and holistic approaches to learning about it.
While my book, The Art of Money, focuses on our personal relationship with money as individuals, couples and creative entrepreneurs, we also incorporate some of the macro side of money in our teachings, including interviews on the wealth gap, social justice investing, and redistributing resources to offer real support and change for marginalized communities.
What pearls of wisdom do you have for other change-making women?
Learn how to listen to your body. Find a good therapist or somatic therapist, do your healing work. “When we slow down and trust our body’s wisdom, it will reveal to us what we most need.” A good therapist can help you move mountains, which ripples out through the rest of your life.
What’s your biggest challenge when it comes to finding clothes that look good and feel good?
I fluctuate between “I LOVE clothes!” to “I really don’t care about clothes” and wearing the same stretchy velvet jumpsuit over and over. My biggest challenge is finding comfy clothes that I love AND that fit my ever-changing body.
In my earlier years, I had a set style but my shape has gone through changes over time, particularly after having kids. My shape eventually returned to my pre-pregnancy days, but after 5 years in perimenopause, and now menopause, my body isn’t bouncing back like it used to.
I'm still trying to figure out what fits, looks good, and makes me feel good. I’m also learning to love and understand the fuller and curvier size I am now. I’m embracing my body and focusing on health and strength. After years of transition, I’m just finding the clothing staples that I love and feel great in - like my Democracy jeans!
How has finding Democracy Clothing empowered you?
I stopped wearing jeans for a few years during perimenopause and, honestly, thought I might be done forever. I used to say it would take a miracle for me to find jeans that I love and that fit my changing, curvy body but after trying Democracy, that miracle came true! I love the way they fit and feel - even during menopause!
What’s your favorite Democracy jean and what do you love about it?
My favorite pair: Stretch Indigo Denim "Ab"solution® Itty Bitty Boot Petite Jean. They remind me of an old favorite pair of jeans I used to have. I love the way they feel on my belly and love the stretch. I’m 5’3 and the petite size fits me perfectly.
What are you most proud of?
Three things immediately come to mind:
My family.
Doing work I love that supports a larger community.
Making it to menopause - I’m really so excited to be in this phase of my life.
I’m also proud of our Money Memoirs, shared on The Art of Money blog + podcast. In these intimate conversations, I talk to real people from different walks of life, cultures, and economic backgrounds about real money stuff. The series covers tough times, how we overcome them, hard-won wisdom, and inspirational insights we’ve gained over the years.
Where do you hope your jean journey will take you next?
In my day to day life, I still love to dance and go hiking in the Colorado mountains - I do some of my best thinking on the trails. I’m also looking forward to traveling again!
It can be hard to open ourselves up to wearing jeans again when our bodies have changed. We’re thrilled that Bari took a chance on Democracy Clothing and that we could help her jean miracle come true! From helping others develop healthy financial relationships to embracing her body in the midst of menopause, we can’t wait to see Bari thrive through new seasons of life in her Itty Bitty Boot Democracy Jeans! To learn more about her work, you can read Bari’s book, the Art of Money, or visit her website to learn about the global community and curriculum. You can also follow Bari on Instagram and Facebook.

At some point in our lives, most of us experience the feeling of dread at the prospect of trying on clothes. I’ve had these moments since I was 10 years old…and jeans in particular have been an issue for me. My body shape hasn’t been conducive to traditional jeans. If the legs fit the waist doesn’t and vice versa…it’s always been an uncomfortable struggle.
So, when the host at a business mastermind event I was attending in early 2020, Rachel Rodgers, announced they had FREE JEANS for all of the participants courtesy of Democracy Clothing, I was caught off guard!
Rachel looked absolutely stunning in her jeans and I was excited about the offer, but I immediately started worrying that the jeans wouldn’t fit me. I hoped that maybe they would give us a coupon code, but …
NOPE! The jeans were sitting on a table behind me!
Cue the Free Jean FREAKOUT!
The jeans were here…behind me….on the table!
We had to try them on…and all I could think was “I might die right here.”
My heart starts pounding!!! I’m talking full body sweat!
The Belief Underneath
I had SO MANY unhelpful thoughts – nothing will fit me, everyone will get jeans and I’ll be the only one left out, I’ll be humiliated if the jeans don’t fit… It’s like 7th grade gym class all over again!
Then I asked myself, “what’s the worst thing that can happen?”
The jeans don’t fit.
I wanted to run.
But I also wanted to be part of the group. To fit in with all the other women who got a pair of really nice jeans.
There it was…the real reason for my panic…the fear of not fitting in.
So, if my butt doesn’t fit into those jeans – that must mean I’m not good enough…or worthy.
There…I said it.
I had to be willing to see the real reason I was panicking. I was afraid of not being good enough.
This belief of not being good enough is what was causing the shame to be triggered.
Once I could identify the source of my panic, I could manage it…
And then I realize that it’s ok if the jeans don’t fit.
I get up and pretend to calmly walk over to the table. I see all the sizes but mine!
I start to panic again!
A lot of really terrible options float through my mind at that moment…
Do I walk away and pretend I’m not hurt that my size isn’t there and pretend it doesn’t matter? Or do I make up a ridiculous story about how I’m not allowed to wear jeans because it’s bad for my back?
I build up the courage to grab a pair closest to my size and go try them on.
At least I would know for certain instead of never knowing and just beating myself up for not being the right size.
Will They Fit?
I grab a pair of jeans that are at least 1 (if not 2 sizes) smaller than I usually wear.
I’m telling myself that I can do this.
If they don’t fit – it’s ok. I will not die from jeans not fitting. I can sit with whatever feelings come my way.
But a crazy thing happens when I walk into the bathroom stall and begin to try the jeans on.
By the time I got one leg in, up to my knee – I knew they were going to fit.
I put the other leg in and begin to pull up…
“THEY’RE GOING TO FIT!” I’m screaming in my head!!!
And what do you know - they fit!!!!!!
I almost cried in that bathroom stall.
I walked out and saw so many of my friends trying their jeans on and asking how they fit.
I told them I was shocked that they fit because the size was smaller than I am used to but they were so comfortable! I never wanted to take them off!
A Revelation
As I’m strutting out of the bathroom with some new found confidence, I walk up to the stylist, Raven Roberts, who also was one of our speakers, and I told her that the jeans fit!
She’s cheering me on and I’m sharing all of the panic that has been going on for the last few minutes and how I almost didn’t allow myself to try them on.
What a shame that would have been because I would have missed out!
Right then…in that moment, I had a HUGE AHA…
My entire life I’ve been told I needed to hide my body.
“If you wear this, it’ll hide that,” or “Wear this to minimize that”….hide, hide, hide…
The message I’ve been given was that my body was bad and I needed to hide it.
My clothes never made me feel good.
I realized that to birth my dreams into reality I need to see my body and myself differently. In clothes like Democracy, I can embrace the skin that I’m in.
I felt like a ton of weight came off my shoulders that day.
Thank you Democracy Clothing for making the most comfortable and fashionable jeans I’ve ever had the pleasure of trying on! And for giving me the opportunity to shine a light on a myth I had been unconsciously believing for far too long... that my body was unworthy and needed to be hidden.
Nothing could be further from the truth!
All bodies are meant to be celebrated. So celebrate I will!

]]>Where do you call home?
Just over the Washington, DC border in Maryland
Tell us some things about you!
Being asked to tell you about myself is hard because there are so many different things I do that define who I am! I’m a mother of two high schoolers and teach middle school computer science. When I’m not spending time with my own teens or the ones I teach, I blog at TechSavvyMama.com, a site where I’ve been writing about technology, education, and parenting since 2008.
My unique perspective as a teacher and parent during a year of learning during a pandemic has kept me quite busy. It’s an honor to be considered a trusted thought leader in this space, especially in 2021 when we’ve had to rethink the way we learn and work virtually. This year I’ve provided lots of advice to parents about learning through screens and helpful tips to teachers about tech for their virtual classrooms through blog posts, podcasts, interviews, and brand collaborations.
Despite being tech savvy, I’m good at unplugging and putting my phone down to be in the moment with my teens, my Golden Retriever Labrador rescue, and our growing flock of backyard chickens. I always tell parents the best way to get their kids to unplug is to do the things they love together. In our house that means anything outside- hiking, biking, skiing, or spending time on the water kayaking, canoeing, or stand-up paddle boarding!
At Democracy Clothing, we’re all about looking good and feeling good while doing good. What’s the “good” you’re doing in the world?
As I mentioned, I’m a middle school teacher by day but in my spare time, I use my platform as an influencer to champion causes I care about such as fighting against Asian hate, ending childhood cancer and advocating for the importance of fair trade.
Even though I wish such a group like this didn't have to exist, it's an honor to serve on Maryland’s new Asian American Hate Crimes Workgroup. Selected for my background in education and knowledge of social media as we address the rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans in Maryland. I look forward to working with this impressive group of individuals to provide recommendations, strategies, and actions to Governor Larry Hogan
I’ve been deeply committed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital which leads the way the world understands, treats, and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. After a life-changing visit to St Jude, I decided to sign up to run my first half marathon as a St. Jude Hero, committing to raise $2500. I knew I could raise the money but I wasn’t sure about running 13.1 miles when I hadn’t ever run anything longer than a 5K before! Despite my uncertainty, I laced up my running shoes and haven’t stopped running since!
I’m also passionate about raising awareness about the importance of purchasing fair trade products after traveling to Haiti in 2012. The 2010 earthquake raised the world’s awareness of Haiti through the coverage that focused on death and destruction suffered by this already poor country. As recovery efforts began and foreign aid poured in to provide immediate assistance, there was also a need to rebuild people’s lives through sustainable jobs as their livelihoods were disrupted. Through numerous trips to Haiti over the years, I’ve been able to raise awareness about the positive impact fair trade products have on artisans, but I’ve also changed how Haiti is perceived by others. I never set out to win an award for my philanthropic efforts in Haiti but to have been awarded the 2018 Iris Award for Philanthropic Work of the Year meant my work touched people who understood that I was making a difference.
What pearls of wisdom do you have for other change-making women?
Ignore the hustle. Live your life authentically to model the values you believe in. Always make time to say yes to yourself and your kids but don't forget to stop and smell the flowers along the way.
What’s your biggest challenge when it comes to finding clothes that look good and feel good?
My biggest challenge in finding clothes that look and feel good is finding items that fit my petite frame and muscular calves and thighs! I was a 3-sport athlete in high school, continued to play tennis in college, and these days I am addicted to my Orange Theory workouts that I do as part of my half marathon training.
I love how strong I am and all the things that my body has accomplished but brands have not always had inclusive sizing. This has made it challenging to find clothes that look good to help me feel great. These days I’m appreciative of the wider range of sizes and development of better fabrics that stretch, smooth, and give women the confidence they deserve to have in their clothes.
What’s your favorite Democracy jean and what do you love about it?
I have a collection of Democracy skinny jeans that I just can’t give up and recently got the Itty Bitty Boot, Curved Fray Step Hem, and Straight Leg – all in petite sizes! I can’t say that I have a current favorite because I love them all! I know when I order a pair of jeans from Democracy that the sizes are consistent and they’ll fit me well, look great, and can easily transition from teaching to date nights, regardless of the style!
Democracy's core values are to embrace who you are, enhance what you got, elevate your confidence, and evolve your personal style. What advice do you have for becoming more comfortable and confident with who you are? How have you embraced who you are at this stage of your life?
I like to say I’m a work in progress. The person I am today is different from the one I was when dating my husband, as a newlywed, and a first-time mom. I’ve grown and changed and love who I am today but know the experiences that are part of my past have contributed to my growth. I know it’s ok to not have all the answers and to grow along with your significant other and kids. The experiences we have throughout different stages of life are meaningful and powerful!
What are you most proud of?
I know it’s probably cliché and cheesy but I’m going to say that I’m most proud of my kids! It’s been an unbelievably hard 15+ months because of the pandemic but I’m proud of the way our family has come together and made the best of being home. I’ve gotten to know my kids better than I would have if it was a normal year and we were running in all different directions. All the time together has been a treasure, especially as I look towards my oldest starting her senior year of high school this fall.
Where do you hope your jean journey will take you next?
As much as I’ve loved spending this year close to home, I’m also very ready to travel. While I’ve loved the time I’ve had with my teens at home during the pandemic, our family is looking forward to being able to travel the world again. We’ve had some incredible family adventures to China, Hong Kong, Japan, Turkey, Vietnam, and Thailand that have contributed to their education beyond the classroom. I’m a big believer in global citizenship so I hope my jean journey involves a passport when it’s safe to travel again!
TechSavvy Mom, Leticia Barr is living proof that petite women can pack a powerful punch! We’re inspired by her words of wisdom and the many ways that she’s making a difference. Parenting her teens, teaching middle school science, raising money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, blogging about media and her trips to Haiti, and adding her voice at the table to address the issue of Asian hate - all reasons why we’re proud to lift up Leticia’s perspective and work!
